News question 1 practice
Stuart Hall's representation
Question 1
Stuart Hall's reception theory discusses how media producers use their power to create a preferred meaning by what information they leave present, absent or different. This theory is applicable to the how the Daily Mirror and Daily Express present juxtaposing views of Boris Johnson's final days in government.
The main image on the Daily Mirror has a mid-shot of Boris Johnson looking defeated through his body language of his head in his hands. Furthermore, he is looking to the left to imply that he isn't moving forwards as his turn as prime minister has ended and an eye level camera angle is used to take away any connotations of power. furthermore, the headline of 'Party's over Boris!' is an intertextual reference to all the previous articles about the Party Gate scandal. The use of the word 'over' also marks the end of his turn as Prime Minister as if everything is ending for him as he has been defeated with the sensationalist language typical of the tabloid genre highlighting this. The criticism of Boris Johnson makes sense for a left leaning newspaper as their preferred dominant reading would be that Boris Johnson has been humiliated and defeated as they have left all the facts about his party present.
However, the Daily Express has a long shot high angle of Boris Johnson in the main image to create a preferred meaning of him in power with his body language having his hands out and mouth open in a slight smile to imply confidence. This implies that he is going to continue fighting and isn't fazed by these accusations. The headline furthers this meaning by saying 'defiant and unbowed...Boris: I'll lead the party to victory'. This creates the preferred meaning that Boris Johnson is confident and not defeated by the accusations. This matches the Daily Expresses right wing ideology that Boris Johnson aligns with. Furthermore Boris mentions that he will 'lead the party to victory' which shows that he isn't just saving himself but the rest of the conservative party although this could have dual meanings with it not just being the conservative party but the physical party he's being accused of attending to suggest that he isn't going to leave anyone behind because he is a good leader.
