News tasks

 Task 1

The news industry has faced lots of challenges over the past 20 years with a decline in print sales. Some newspapers have felt the effects of this more than other like The Guardian who's readership got so low it now only prints for the prestige with its last known circulation being 100,000 and The Guardian only becoming profitable in 2019. To counter this change news has started to make a shift to online with The Guardian's website that can get money through not just donations but a subscription which is more profitable than print sales. The Daily Mail made a big move into the online news world with the Mail Online that publishes 2000 articles a day and 4000 images. The Mail Online can publish so much due to its repeated narratives such as the Royal Family or immigration that will consistently get clicks without having to put effort into their articles as the few hits make up for the many flops. The move to online also follows Clary Shirky's theory of interactivity where consumers are becoming producers as shown in the comment sections of the Mail Online and The Guardian allowing anyone to share their thoughts on the subject. However this move to online may alienate a lot of the less savvy older readers of the news that dominate the audience of printed news.
Regulation has also massively changed in the last 20 years with the Millie Dowler case leading to the fall of News Of The World and causing the Leveson inquiry that made stricter rules for news outlets with the rise of Impress and IPSO who are regulators however have not made any changes or regulated any news. IPSO is government funded and only followed by local news outlets while Impress is followed by most newspapers except The Guardian who self regulate.
News seems to be moving more and more online with print still in decline maybe suggesting that papers will be totally gone leaving only online news sources. On top of that with people becoming less and less trusting of big news sources the rise of news of social media may spell doom for online news altogether and leaving only the prosumer making posts on Twitter about latest news.
